Bridford Fete Tug of War

Bridford has a long history of successfully competing in tug of war competitions throughout the South West. This continued in 2023 when Bridford beat the team from Christow in the Barbarians Cup, here’s a little clip of the winning pull Bridford’s Winning Tug of War team.

If you think you have what it takes to win the Barbarians Cup, at the Village Fete on 13th July please fill in the Tug of War Entry Form 2024 and email to Graham Padgham.

Remembering Bridford’s Tug of War History

A few remembrances about Bridford’s past connection with tug of war:

40+ years ago there was always a tug of war competition at the Bridford Fête between teams loosely linked to the valley’s pubs.

During the ’80s the Bridford team started winning our annual competition as well as others at nearby villages, such as at the Christow Show, Tedburn St Mary, etc.

It was suggested we should consider pulling at AAA events where pulls are controlled by national tug of war rules including teams being weight related eg under 600kg, 620kg, 640kg, etc.

AAA events necessitated being much fitter than for fête pulls where the heaviest team invariably won, so the Bridford team trained more or less weekly throughout the year.

Our main exercise was lifting a 45 gallon drum filled with concrete blocks up a tree via a pulley in the Old Rectory grounds.

For several years the team travelled all over the South West pulling at AAA events and winning numerous medals.

By the end of the decade the number of team members fell away as they aged and some moved away and Bridford’s successful tug of war era ended.

In 2022 fete committee agreed to revive this historical event and the Barbarians Cup was purchased and is on display in The Bridford Inn.

Cheriton Bishop & Teign Valley Patient Group

YOUR PATIENT GROUP – GET INVOLVED!

The Patient Group (PG) provides a facility for two way communication between the practice and registered patients. The group can provide feedback to the practice on patient’s needs, concerns and suggestions, and can also constructively challenge how our healthcare is delivered. The group can also develop projects and events to promote good health and lifestyle practice and awareness.

The PG comprises volunteers registered with the practice and members of the professional team. It works very closely with the practice, but is an independent group. We meet 3 to 4 times a year and occasionally more frequently when projects are in progress. The group endeavours to have a membership which represents the population covered by the practice, both demographically and geographically.

The group has been running since 2011, but since the Covid lockdown of 2020 has not been active. We now wish to re-energise and restart the group, and we are looking for new group members. If you wish to be involved, contact Steve Colderick at colderick@btinternet.com to register your interest. Please tell us a little bit about yourself, and any particular areas of interest or skills (but these are not essential, a commitment to active involvement in the group is more important!). Responses by Friday 24th November, and we will contact respondees in early December.

Roadworks Wednesday 11th-13th October Affecting 360 Bus

The roadworks on the valley road between Wednesday 11th and Friday 13th October will affect the 360 bus in the village.

Country Bus have advised that the first two buses of the day (07:15 and 09:25) will run from Bridford. And the last two buses from Exeter – Sidwell St (16:15 and 17:55) will also run to Bridford. However, the two buses in the middle of the day will terminate at Teign House.

Bus Shelter Opening

We had a marvellous turnout of 25 people for the Bridford Bus Shelter launch on Thursday 7th September. It was lovely to have some of the Cubs with us who had contributed gorgeous birds and butterflies, as well as the trio of artists – Lucy from Whippletree, Lucy Smerdon and Pippa Marriott – who have created the different elements. Jennifer Padgham, Parish Council chair, officiated, and chat and fizz and buns were enjoyed as well as a delightful community buzz. Big thanks to Judy, and Lou too, for all their work and the splendid flowers.
